Level 3 DIPLOMA in Dental Nurse Training

This qualification, will allow you to improve your career opportunities for professional development. It is all about you obtaining hands-on workplace experience, learning academic theory to underpinning competencies at the practice Education Centre then being assess when performing tasks that you are required to meet National Occupational nurse

A dental nurse supports the dentist/therapist/hygienist in all aspects of patient care, this includes getting the appropriate instruments ready, mixing materials and ensuring patient comfort. They will also take notes from dentists dictation for records and once the patient has left, the dental nurse disinfects, prepares the surgery for the next patient and decontaminates/sterilises all of the instruments.

In general practice, sometimes the dental nurse may help with reception work - making appointments, taking payments, dealing with paperwork and meeting and reassuring patients.

Dental nurses can be employed in general practice, hospitals or the community dental services and can also train as a dental nurse in the armed forces.

From July 2008 all Dental Nurses (DN) in the UK must be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC). The GDC sets the standards for the profession and dental nurses have to comply with the guidance and rulings.

The City & Guilds is the courses awarding body and has a legal responsibility under Dentist Act 1984 to check the quality of all Professional Complementary to Dentistry (PCD) accredited education training providers which lead to registration with GDC.

Dental nursing is very promising and rewarding 2yr course, comprising both theory and work placement. 



Personal Qualities and Education

Educationally we are looking for students with a good standard G.C.S.E. pass, Grade C or above in English and Maths. An understanding of Human Biology ia an asset. A Dental Nurse requires a confident, but calm, friendly manner wih an understanding and sympathetic approach towards all patients, especially those who are worried or nervous.

Training Programme

The training we run is a 24 month programme to achieve City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing through an advanced apprentice framework- Skills for Health. Practical competencies are undertaken in surgery 4 days per week plus 1 day off-the-job training for underpinning knowledge of practical tasks, including Functional Skills if necessary.

Once qualified, nurses are eligible to be included on the GDC National Register, allowing you to follow post-qualification courses in Oral Health, Conscious Sedation, Orthodontics and Radiology etc. Qualification as a Dental Nurse is an asset for those wishing to become a Dental Hygienist / Therapist.

Student Intake and Selection

Student Dental Nurses are recruited from the Eastern areas i.e. Lowestoft to Norwich and surrounding towns. They undertake “Practical” in-house training at one or more of the group Practices. Most of our Nurses are “home-grown” and they commence their training on leaving school and remain with the practice after qualification. All Nurses are employed personnel from commencement of training.

Training Information
