The School of Dental Nursing
We are an Approved City & Guilds Centre delivering a City & Guilds Level 3 Dental Nursing qualification.
The School of Dental Nursing has been established since 1989 and we have been delivering dental nurse training programmes for many years. We offer employment, deliver in-house training and assessment of trainee dental nurses whom we recruit locally.
We deliver a modern comprehensive training programme that includes off-the-job classroom-based lectures, and on-the-job practical training that takes place under direct supervision within our own dental practices (11 sites). All training is carried out under the direct supervision of our experienced mentor dental care professionals and in-house training team of tutors and assessors.
Training facilities: Based in Great Yarmouth, we have an Education Centre where practical off-the-job training is delivered.
Resources: Whilst on the course, all learning resources, uniforms and personal protective equipment are provided by us.
Employment: All trainee dental nurses are employed from day one, and on completion of the programme, will progress to the role of a GDC registered dental nurse and continue working within the company undertaking further post-qualification training.
Our dental nurse training is available to applicants aged 18 and over. The course and training best suits college leavers, but all applications are welcomed and considered. Educationally our student applicants will require a GCSE standard pass 4/C or above in English Language and Maths as a minimum. Science is preferable but not a requirement, and an understanding of human biology is an asset.
We recruit from our local area, from the Eastern areas i.e. Norwich to Lowestoft, and surrounding towns. We take on one cohort of new students every year in the Autumn, but the best way to keep updated with our training course is to follow us on our Instagram page dedicated to our training school.
A dental nurse requires a confident, but calm, friendly manner, with an understanding and sympathetic approach towards all patients, especially those who are worried or nervous. We are looking for applicants who are assertive and can work in a team but also independently, with a flexible and reliable approach to working. A good standard of health and manual dexterity is required.

In 1998 the school received accreditation by the Training and Enterprise Council as an approved training organisation. In 2001 we were accredited as a City & Guilds Approved Centre. Our very own nurses have studied further and are now tutors and assessors training others.
Once qualified, nurses are eligible to be included on the General Dental Council Register as a dental care professional, allowing them to work in the UK as a registered dental nurse. This also allows them to complete post-qualification courses in specialised areas such as Dental Radiography, Oral Health Education, Conscious Sedation, Orthodontics etc.
We work a five-day Monday – Friday week. 8.30 am- 5.30 pm with an allocated hour lunch break. Certain practices have flexible shifts for working patients: 7.45am – 2.15pm (early) or 2pm – 8.30pm (late).
The training programme
Our trainee dental nurses will be enrolled on, and study towards a City & Guilds level 3 Technical Occupational Entry to Professional Practice for Dental Nurses (Diploma), which takes approximately 12-15 months to achieve.
To achieve the qualification, you will need to complete 11 portfolio-based units and pass two synoptic multiple-choice examinations. To prepare you for this you will attend theory lectures and undertake practical training in a clinical surgery environment under the supervision of clinical mentors. You will complete the module units with an assessor who will support you in completing written assignment-based work and undertake observations in surgery to ensure your practical competencies.
This is a competency-based qualification that allows the trainee to work towards qualifying as a dental nurse and then register with the General Dental Council as a dental care professional within the scope of a dental nurse. It is a mandatory requirement for all dental care professionals to be registered with the General Dental Council in order to work within the UK.
